Korean Films Score 20 Nominations at 11th AFAs
Returning to Hong Kong after three editions held in Macau, the Asian Film Awards have announced the nominations for their 11th edition, to be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on March 21st. Leading the list of nominees is PARK Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden with six appearance, while YEON Sang-ho’s TRAIN TO BUSAN isn’t far behind with five.
PARK’s film, an adaptation of Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith transposed to Colonial Era Korea and Japan which debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, received nods for Best Supporting Actress (MOON So-ri), Best Newcomer (KIM Tae-ri), Best Screenplay (PARK Chan-wook, CHUNG Seo-kyung), Best Editing (KIM Sang-bum, KIM Jae-bum), Best Costume Design (CHO Sang-gyeong) and Best Production Design (RYU Seong-hee), yet was omitted from the major Best Film and Best Director categories.
YEON’s zombie blockbuster, which also bowed in Cannes, was recognized in the categories for Best Actor (GONG Yoo), Best Supporting Actor (Don LEE), Best Editing (YANG Jin-mo), Best Costume Design (KWON Yoo-jin, IM Seung-hee) and Best Special Effects (JUNG Hwang-su).
Meanwhile both NA Hong-jin’s THE WAILING and KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows are up for Best Film, while NA also received a nod for Best Director. THE WAILING also secured nominations for Japanese actor KUNIMURA Jun as Best Supporting Actor and KIM Dong-han for Best Sound. The Age of Shadows was also nominated for Best Cinematography (KIM Jee-yong) and Best Music (Mowg).
