The First Project That Is Simultaneously Adapted in Two Countries

Korean web cartoonist KANG Full’s The Witch will get film adaptations in Korea and China.

Directed by KIM Dae-woo, whose previous titles include period dramas such as the Vietnam-set Obsessed, the folktale twist The Servant and the Joseon dynasty-set sexy comedy Forbidden Quest, the Korean version will be co-produced by HAPPY HOURS FILMS Co., and Kim’s own company IRON PACK LTD., with finance and distribution from Next Entertainment World (N.E.W.).

The Chinese version will be a co-production between China’s Huace Film & TV and N.E.W. Leste CHEN, who directed the megahit Chinese language remake of a Korean hit Miss Granny, 20, Once Again, is the director.

The Witch is a web cartoon that Kang published serially in 2013. It is a mystery romance about a strange woman and a man, who loves her knowing that he might end up dead.

Compared to past Korea-China collaborations that usually meant China-invested movies directed by Korean directors and/or featuring Korean talents, or Chinese language remakes of Korean hits, it is noticeable that The Witch is the first project that two major companies from each country purchase the same original’s copyright and develop it into two separate films simultaneously.

Popular as one of the first generation web cartoonists in Korea, many of KANG’s previous cartoons including Crush On You, Ba:Bo, The Neighbors and 26 Years received screen adaptations.

“In order to make films that are suitable for China, we put contents localizations on our top priority,” said the N.E.W. CEO KIM Woo-taek on a statement. N.E.W. and Huace are currently planning and proceeding to set up a joint venture in China.
