Avatar: The Way of Water, Topped Weekend Box Office with 2.68 Million Viewers in Total

With 83% of Sales, Weekend Viewers Nearly Doubled Compared to the Last Week

 

 

 

James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water topped the box office with an overwhelming performance on the first weekend of its release. Also, with the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the total number of weekend moviegoers doubled from the previous weekend.

 

According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) on December 19, Avatar: The Way of Water, which was released on the 14th, topped the box office with 2,030,024 viewers and 83.7% of sales from December 16 to 18 over the weekend. The total number of viewers surpassed 2.68 million on the 5th day since its release. 

 

Avatar: The Way of Water depicts the relentless threats Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family faces on Pandora's planet, the long journey and battle to survive, and the wounds the family must endure. The film is the sequel to Avatar (2009) and the second film in the Avatar franchise made by James Cameron in 13 years. Compared to the prequel, which was released in 2009 and attracted 1.87 million people during the same period, the box office speed of the sequel is faster. The final score of the prequel was 13.33 million viewers. 

 

With the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the theater district seems to have regained its vitality. The total number of audiences over the weekend was 2.515 million, about 183% up compared to the 887,000 viewers over the previous weekend. 

 

The Korean movie, The Night Owl, which had topped the box office for 3 consecutive weeks before the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, stepped down to 2nd place with 1,175,233 viewers and 6.1% of sales over the weekend. The total audience of The Night Owl is 2,893,135. 

 

The Korean animation, Shinbi’s Haunted House: The Dimension Ghost and the Seven Worlds, which was released on the same day as Avatar: The Way of Water, won 3rd place with 1,127,430 viewers and 4.1% of sales. Also, Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight rose one notch to 4th place, attracting 19,003 viewers through 366 screens. The film recorded 357,659 viewers in total so far.
