Disney Sequel Approaches 10 Million Viewers

Business slowed 25% after last week’s massive boost but the latest Disney behemoth remained a potent threat on the charts as a major new local title was unable to break through as counter-programming. Sales remained strong with 3.34 million tickets sold while the domestic industry was once again on the defensive, claiming just 18% of those.

Following last weekend’s massive debut, which represented the third highest opening weekend of all time in Korea, Frozen 2 eased just 33% as it posted a spectacular 2.59 million entries (USD 18.7 million) over its sophomore weekend. This raised its total to 8.58 million admissions (USD 60.7 million) in just 11 days and it won’t be long before it crosses the 10 million threshold and sails past its predecessor, which recorded 10.3 million sales in 2014.

Returning to the big screen 14 years after PARK Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005), local star LEE Young-ae headlined the new Korean thriller Bring Me Home, which debuted earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival. Despite a large amount of publicity surrounding her return, the film mustered a disappointing debut with 292,000 tickets (USD 2.2 million) sold over the weekend, and 463,000 sales (USD 3.1 million) recorded over its first five days. Interest appears to already be on the wane and with several major titles opening this week LEE’s return seems not to be destined for box office glory.

Meanwhile the local financial drama BLACK MONEY recovered somewhat from last week with a slighter 38% slide, as it claimed another 226,000 viewers (USD 1.6 million). After three weekends, CHUNG Ji-young’s film has counted a sturdy 2.26 million admissions (USD 16.2 million).

Hollywood creature feature Crawl had a minor debut with 68,000 sales (USD 507,000) over the weekend and 110,000 seats (USD 756,000) filled since Wednesday, while fifth place was taken by the French romcom Love at Second Sight, which kicked off with 34,000 sales (USD 251,000) over the three-day period and 54,000 entries (USD 370,000) for its first five days.

While Frozen 2 has every chance to go three for three at the top of the charts, this weekend should provide some more effective Hollywood counter-programming, in the form of the Oscar hopefuls Ford v Ferrari and Knives Out. Also opening is the local family drama A Little Princess, although it may struggle to take viewers away from Disney.
