ALADDIN and PARASITE Continue March to 10 Million

Thanks to the first post-Endgame Marvel title, business shot up 40% week-on-week in Korea in midsummer to 4.11 million ticket sales. In the absence of fresh local fare, Hollywood gobbled up a sizeable 97% portion of the market.

Spider-Man: Far From Home debuted with a staggering 2.86 million entries (USD 21.38 million) over the weekend, one of the largest openings of all time in the market and around 10% higher than its predecessor Spider-Man: Homecoming. Since opening last Tuesday, the comic book tentpole has attracted 4.52 million viewers (USD 33.2 million) to date.

Though Disney’s live action update Aladdin took its biggest tumble yet during its eighth week on the charts it was down just 33% as it brought in another 604,000 spectators (USD 4.44 million) to push its total to a staggering 9.22 million admissions (USD 66.94 million). The film should become only the seventh foreign film of all time to enter the ten million admissions club in Korea before much longer.

Off 51% in its third frame was Toy Story 4 with another 347,000 sales (USD 2.46 million) counted, pushing its total to a solid 2.78 million entries (USD 21.4 million). The animated sequel has already almost doubled the total of Toy Story 3.

Continuing its slow retreat from the charts was BONG Joon-ho’s PARASITE, which was down 60% in its seventh week, with another 90,000 seats (USD 677,000) filled. That gives the Palme d’Or winner 9.77 million sales (USD 71.07 million).

Unable to answer the competition, John Wick 3: Parabellum stumbled 83% in its sophomore spin on the charts, adding 66,000 viewers (USD 507,000) to bring its total to 854,000 admissions (USD 6.21 million) in the market.

Though Spider-Man is expected to remain the hottest ticket in town, two local titles will be entering the fray this coming weekend, the period comedy HOMME FATALE and the thriller The Culprit, winner of the Audience Award at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival over the weekend.
