Hollywood Sucks Up Business as Monsoon Hits

Ticket sales doubled as the summer season finally kicked into high gear with the arrival of the monsoon season and a major new franchise entry which drew almost record crowds but left slim pickings for holdovers. 3.18 million seats were filled, with Hollywood accounting for 88% of business.

Spider-Man: Homecoming scored a franchise best opening for the webslinger, doubling the opening score of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. With 2.61 million viewers (USD 19.13 million) over the weekend and 3.56 million spectators (USD 25.62 million) in five days, the Sony-Marvel film scored one of the best Hollywood debuts ever in Korea, just behind fellow Marvel films Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. With little competition for at least another week, business should remain strong.

After a strong debut, local period drama Anarchist from Colony slowed 60% as it brought in another 328,000 admissions (USD 2.31 million), bringing its total to a strong 1.84 million entries (USD 12.36 million). Much further behind, Transformers: The Last Knight dropped 80% as its take fell to 70,000 sales (USD 477,000) and an underwhelming 2.56 million (USD 18.38 million) total.

BONG Joon-ho’s Okja held firm in fourth in limited release, down 40% as it filled 53,000 additional seats (USD 353,000), giving it 215,000 admissions (USD 1.42 million) to date. Down 90% in its sophomore frame was the critically-mauled bust REAL, which added 16,000 viewers (USD 105,000) for a dismal 448,000 spectator (USD 2.81 million) total.

Meanwhile, Hong Sangsoo’s Cannes competition title The Day After opened in 10th with 6,700 sales (USD 47,000) over the weekend and almost 9,200 entries (USD 62,000) in its first four days.
