Strong Debut for Local Doc OUR PRESIDENT

Disney laid claim to first place at the Korean box office as the latest installment of Pirates of the Caribbean climbed the chart and a surprising second-place debut came from a local documentary. Hollywood seized 70% of the box office loot this weekend, which amounted to 2.44 million admissions.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales had a robust opening with 1.16 million tickets (USD 8.91 million) sold over its debut weekend and a total of 1.53 million seats filed (USD 11.5 million) in its first five days. The sequel likely won’t remain atop the chart for long with some major competition on the way later this week.

Opening in a surprising second place was the local documentary OUR PRESIDENT, which debuted with a formidable 510,000 entries (USD 3.79 million) and 596,000 admissions (USD 4.37 million) since Thursday. Chronicling the life of the late president ROH Moo-hyun, the film has likely benefitted from the recent election of his former chief of staff MOON Jae-in to the highest office in the land.

Down 50% in its second week was the sensationally successful genre film Get Out. With another 403,000 viewers (USD 3.03 million) snatching up tickets over the weekend, the film now has 1.72 million admissions (USD 12.64 million) in the tank.

Following a controversy-marred opening weekend, local crime thriller The Merciless, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last week, saw a steep 71% decline as it brought in another 111,000 spectators (USD 837,000). The BYUN Sung-hyun film has now banked 846,000 viewers (USD 6.12 million) after a week and a half on release.

Hollywood animation The Boss Baby closed out the top five with 100,000 entries (USD 690,000) in week four, giving it an impressive 2.34 million viewer (USD 16.15 million) haul to date.

DC Comics blockbuster Wonder Woman will vie with local period action-drama WARRIORS OF THE DAWN later this week.
