Hollywood Blockbusters Command the Chart

The year’s biggest film to date around the world had an impressive debut in Korea, making it the fourth US release on the trot to claim first place at the domestic box office. For March business was brisk during a warm weekend, with 2.14 million tickets sold, 93% of which for Hollywood titles.

After a good start on Thursday, Disney’s live action update The Beauty and the Beast grew and grew on the strength of stellar audience reactions, ending the weekend with a gigantic 1.4 million spectators (USD 10.61 million) and 1.57 million admissions (USD 11.81 million) overall. Despite some local competition on the way, the singing lovers should have no trouble racking in more cash over the coming weeks.

Sliding 61% in its sophomore frame, Kong: Skull Island added 318,000 entries (USD 2.34 million) to its haul, which now stands at 1.55 million tickets (USD 11.45 million). Fellow blockbuster Logan was down a similar amount as it added another 159,000 viewers (USD 1.22 million) to its 2.08 million spectators (USD 15.72 million) total.

Opening in fourth was the local espionage comedy PART-TIME SPY with a lackluster 89,000 entries (USD 637,000) and 115,000 admissions (USD 800,000) in four days. Meanwhile La La Land reentered the top five, adding 20,000 tickets (USD 152,000) to its sterling 3.45 million tickets (USD 25.61 million) haul.

The top diversity release over the weekend was The Space Between Us with 16,000 sales (USD 117,000) and 22,000 admissions (USD 154,000) over its first four days.

Local thrillers The Prison and Ordinary Person enter the ring this week, both trying to unseat the current Disney champ.
