Local Thriller BLUEBEARD Settles for Second

As we enter the least busy movie-going season on the calendar and as much attention is being diverted to looming elections in Korea, business was down another 20% this past weekend, with almost three fifths of tickets going to Hollywood titles. With 39% of sales, Korean films struggled with several titles that opened in the last two weeks almost gone from theaters already.

South Korea was one of 80 markets where Logan opened in first place, though its debut in Korea wasn’t as high as elsewhere. That said, with 633,000 viewers (USD 4.48 million) in its first weekend and 1.08 million spectators (USD 8.12 million) since its Wednesday bow, it was a far better performance than previous standalone Wolverine titles in the market but down from the more popular X-Men entries. With both critics and viewers in agreement about the violent Logan, the 20th Century Fox title should see plenty more business on the way.

After a powerful 386,000 admissions (USD 2.78 million) debut on Wednesday (a holiday in Korea), Lotte Entertainment’s new thriller Bluebeard quickly fell from grace and ended up recording 433,000 entries (USD 3.17 million) over the three-day weekend and 910,000 sales (USD 6.54 million) overall.

Down a steep 75% in its sophomore was M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, which added 179,000 viewers (USD 1.33 million) to bring its total to 1.53 million spectators (USD 10.72 million). Losing just over two thirds of its business in its third week was court drama New Trial, with another 134,000 entries (USD 967,000) boosting its total to 2.27 million admissions (USD 15.62 million). Far behind in fifth place was Dreamworks animation Trolls, with another 48,000 tickets (USD 328,000) giving it a new total of 643,000 viewers (USD 4.12 million).

It was a busy week on the diversity chart, with local Colonial Era indie drama Snowy Road opening with 39,000 spectators (USD 268,000) over the three-day and 89,000 viewers (USD 597,000) in five days, which was good enough for sixth on the main chart. After its Best Picture win at the Academy Awards, Moonlight jumped up three spots and brought in another 29,000 entries (USD 217,000), giving it 105,000 admissions (USD 739,000) to date. Third on the diversity chart and tenth overall was Martin Scorsese’s Silence, which debuted with 24,000 tickets sold (USD 164,000) and 51,000 viewers (USD 345,000) across its first five days.

Kong: Skull Island opens this week but much like it will in the US and elsewhere, it will face steep competition from holdover Logan.
