VETERAN Ascends to 3rd All Time

LEE Joon-ik's period drama The Throne maintained its pace following its strong debut last week to top the charts during the busy Chuseok holiday weekend, which welcomed 3.32 million viewers to theaters.

Dipping just 7%, the historical drama featuring SONG Kang-ho and YOO Ah-in (also a star in the current smash Veteran) drew 1.23 million viewers (USD 8.48 million), bringing its total to a sturdy 3.59 million (USD 24.1 million) to date. The film convincingly beat out other pretenders for the Chuseok holiday crown with an appealing combination of on screen talent and historical subject. Adding in Monday and Tuesday, which were also part of the Chuseok holiday and very busy theater days, the film has now accrued 4.79 million admissions (USD 32.14 million).

Opening in second place was CJ Entertainment's action-comedy THE ACCIDENTAL DETECTIVE with KWON Sang-woo and SUNG Dong-il. Though it couldn't threaten for the top spot, the modest offering posted a decent opening with 553,415 viewers (USD 3.81 million) and 1.31 million (USD 8.87 million) by Tuesday night.

In its sophomore weekend, Hollywood offering Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials eased 39% for a 516,049 viewer frame (USD 3.52 million) and a respectable 2.32 million (USD 15.55 million) by the end of the holiday. Also from America, The Intern, a comedy with Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, opened in fourth place with 337,402 viewers (USD 2.38 million). By the close of Tuesday the comedy has reached a robust 734,375 admissions total (USD 5.11 million).

Touted as one of the major Chuseok releases, war comedy-drama The Long Way Home, with SUL Kyung-gu and YEO Jin-gu, had a disastrous start with just 242,149 spectators (USD 1.65 million) and 501,146 (USD 3.36 million) by the end of Chuseok. Bad reviews put viewers off.

Still a presence despite being on the charts for almost two months was RYOO Seung-wan's smash hit Veteran in sixth place. By Tuesday night the film has reached 13.21 million viewers (USD 87.43 million) and now ranks as the third most successful Korean film of all time, just behind last year's Roaring Currents and Ode to My Father.

With no major wide releases due out this week, The Throne appears set to retain its crown for a third consecutive weekend.
