1974 First Lady Assassination Attempt Reimagined on Screen, World Premiere Set for Gala Presentations This September

A Third Invitation — Repeated Trust in a Filmmaker

The 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) announced on July 8 the official selection of director Hur Jin-ho's new film for its Gala Presentations section. This is not Hur's first invitation to the festival. Following Dangerous Liaisons in 2012 and A Normal Family in 2023, this marks his third selection at TIFF.

The 1974 Incident, Brought to the Screen

The Assassin(s) takes as its central motif the assassination attempt on South Korea's First Lady that occurred during the Liberation Day ceremony on August 15, 1974. The film dramatically reconstructs the event, weaving imagination into the unresolved questions that history left behind. Yoo Hae-jin portrays Cheolgu, a detective tracing the case; Park Hae-il plays Jaehwan, the social affairs editor at a newspaper; and Lee Min-ho takes the role of Yeongil, a rookie journalist. In the official announcement, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey introduced Hur as "one of the filmmakers we love most" and praised the film as "a stunning chapter in Korean history, rendered with exceptional directorial vision."

Gala Presentations — Korean Cinema's Steady Presence

The Gala Presentations section is one of TIFF's most prominent programs, dedicated to spotlighting outstanding new works. Korean films have maintained a steady presence there in recent years: Smugglers in 2023, Harbin in 2024, and No Other Choice in 2025 each screened in the section, with The Assassin(s) continuing the streak this year. Within the broader arc of TIFF's consistent annual inclusion of Korean films in Gala, this latest selection reflects something beyond a single headline pick — it signals a pattern in which Korean directors and genre-accomplished works have earned a recurring place on this international stage. As a film that takes a real episode of modern Korean history and reimagines it through the lens of thriller fiction, The Assassin(s) invites the same question its predecessors faced: whether it can deliver both the genre craftsmanship and narrative depth that this stage demands. The film will have its world premiere at TIFF, which runs September 10–20, before opening in South Korea around the Chuseok holiday season.
