The full-length sci-fi novel 'A Thousand Blues' by author Cheon Seon-ran will be adapted into a film in Hollywood.
On the 10th, Hubble, the literary brand of Dongasia Publishing, announced, "A Thousand Blues has signed a film adaptation contract with Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to meet audiences on global screens."
Warner Bros. Pictures is a global studio known for producing hit films such as the Harry Potter and Dune series. Although the exact amount of the rights deal was not disclosed, it is reported that the adaptation fee was promised to be around 600 million to 700 million KRW (approximately $440,000 to $510,000 USD).
Hubble explained, "Warner Bros. Pictures described 'A Thousand Blues' as an 'original and compelling work' and revealed plans to develop the screenplay and direction with filmmakers such as Celine Song, Greta Gerwig, and Alfonso Cuarón."
Published in 2020, A Thousand Blues won the Grand Prize in the Full-Length Novel category at the 4th Korean Science Literature Awards. Set in a near future where humanoid robots are commonplace, it tells the story of a robot jockey named Collie and a horse named Today, who is approaching euthanasia due to cartilage degeneration.
Last year, the novel was adapted into both a play and an original musical by the National Theater Company of Korea and the Seoul Performing Arts Company, respectively. The musical was re-staged this year due to popular demand.
