Korean Co-Productions to Screen at the Berlin International Film Festival

A pair of Korean co-productions supported by the Jeonju Cinema Project, Dane Komljen’s Afterwater and Éric Baudelaire's A Flower in the Mouth, have been invited to screen at the upcoming 72nd Berlin International Film Festival. Both titles are among the first ten films revealed for this year’s Forum program at Berlinale, a section that focuses on experimental works.

Afterwater, a co-production between Germany, Spain, South Korea and Serbia and the second feature from Serbian filmmaker Dane Komljen, received support from the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) as one of their Jeonju Cinema Projects and was originally scheduled to screen at the 2020 edition to the festival. However, owing to the pandemic, public screenings were not held. The film, which follows three people who explore the space around a lake, will thus have its world premiere in Berlin and subsequently screen officially at JIFF later this year.

A French-German-Korean co-production, A Flower in My Mouth was one of two 2021 Jeonju Project Market titles selected to be Jeonju Cinema Projects. From French director Éric Baudelaire, the film is a mix of narrative and documentary features, loosely adapting a Luigi Pirandello play through images captured at a flower market. Following Berlinale, the film is also expected to screen at JIFF later this year.

Aftermath and A Flower in the Mouth will join The Apartment with Two Women in Berlin, which was recently invited to Berlinale’s Panorama section. The Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) film is the debut of director Kim Sein and premiered in the New Currents section of last year’s Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

The 72nd Berlinale will take place from February 10 to 20.
