K-pop Singer Makes Korean Leading Man Debut in Music Film

Chan-yeol, a member of the popular K-pop outfit EXO, is taking on his first ever leading role in a Korean film after signing on to star in the upcoming music-themed feature production The Box (translated title).

The new film will follow the story of two male characters. One is a youth dreaming of becoming a singer and the other is a hit music producer whose career has begun a downward trajectory. The pair decide to go on a road trip together, which will be filled with all kinds of music and jam sessions.

Born in 1992, Chan-yeol was signed by SM Entertainment in 2008 before joining the band EXO in 2012, which also includes film star DOH Kyung-soo (aka D.O.). Aside from his music work, he has appeared in several television dramas and stepped into a supporting role for KANG Je-gyu’s feature drama Salut d’Amour (2015). He then took on a leading part in the Chinese romantic comedy So I Married an Anti-fan in 2016.

The singer is also expected to participate as a vocalist on the film’s soundtrack. Production on The Box (translated title)is expected to kick off in the middle of this month. The film will be helmed by YANG Jung-woong, who was involved in the staging of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
