MEMOIR OF A MURDERER Director Returns with Colonial Era Combat Drama

The period combat drama Battle (translated title) from director WON Shin-yun kicked off production on August 16. The Colonial Era film sees former A Taxi Driver (2017) co-stars RYU Jun-yeol and YOO Hae-jin share top billing.

Set against the Battle of Bongodong which took place in 1920, Battle chronicles a skirmish that took place between Japanese imperial forces and Korean independence fighters during the Japanese Occupation of Korea (1910-45). Taking place over four days, the standoff delivered the Korean independence army their first victory.

One of Korea’s hottest new stars, RYU has been in a string of hits recently, which have included this year’s Drug War remake Believer and the youth drama Little Forest, as well as prosecutor saga The King (2017) and political drama A Taxi Driver last year.

Among the most reliable veteran stars in the industry, YOO Hae-jin is known for a wide array of hits which include period swashbuckler The Pirates (2014), action-drama Veteran (2015), high-concept comedy LUCK-KEY (2016) and of course A Taxi Driver last year.

Director WON’s most recent outing was the successful serial killer thriller MEMOIR OF A MURDERER (2017). He is also known for the horror The Wig (2005), black comedy A Bloody Aria (2006), kidnap thriller 7 Days (2007) and North Korean spy action-drama The Suspect (2013).

Battle will be released at some point in 2019. The combat drama will be financed and distributed by Showbox while Big Stone Pictures and W Pictures are sharing production duties.
