Remake of Dark Thriller Due Out in 2017

The 2012 dark revenge thriller Confession of Murder is gearing up for a Japanese remake. Showbox, the investor and distributor of the original, confirmed that the Japanese rights to the film were snatched up by ROBOT, the company which has previously made the film Love Letter (1995) and TV series Bayside Shakedown (1997).

Climbed into the director’s chair will IRIE Yu of last year’s Joker Game while the cast will be filled out with FUJIWARA Tatsuya (Death Note, 2006) and ITO Hideaki (Wood Job!, 2014). Handling finance on the title will be Nippon TV while Warner Bros. will take over the film’s Japanese distribution. Due to begin shooting in August, Warner Bros. expects to release the film next year.

From director JUNG Byung-gil, who first helmed the stuntman documentary Action Boys (2008), Confession of Murder became a hit in the fall of 2012, when it reached 2.73 million admissions. The film starred JUNG Jae-young as a jaded cop hunting a killer who publishes a book confessing to his crimes after the expiration of their statute of limitations and becoming a celebrity in the process. The killer was played by star PARK Si-hoo.

This is not the first time the film has been proposed for a remake. Reportedly, producers in the US expressed interest in late 2012, though no finalized deals were made public.
