Texas Fest Gets US Premiere of Bong Joon Ho-Produced HAEMOO

Austin, Texas’Fantastic Fest is gearing up for its 10th anniversary, which will take place next week at the recently reopened Alama Drafthouse. Two Korean films will take part in this year’s festivities: LEE Sang-woo’s I Am Trash and SHIM Sung-bo’s Haemoo.

Competing in the ‘Fantastic Features’section will be LEE’s I Am Trash, which is having its world premiere in Texas. The film is the final installment of the director’s thematic trilogy which also includes Mother Is a Whore(2009) and Father Is a Dog (2010). I Am Trash is LEE’s second film of 2014, following Dear Dictator, which premiered at the Jeonju International Film Festival in spring. Director LEE, who will be present in Austin, stars as a street cleaner who tries to care for his brothers until their father makes an unwelcome return, following his release from jail for raping an adolescent.

A dark maritime thriller based on real events involving a fishing trawler that smuggles illegal immigrants, only for things to go horribly wrong on the open sea, Haemoo is the directorial debut of SHIM Sung-bo, the writer of Bong Joon Ho’s Memories of Murder (2003). Switching roles, Bong is credited as a co-writer and executive produced on the film, which had its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this month.

Fantastic Fest’s 10th edition will take place from September 18th to 25th.
