Military Brothels Doc Earns Special Prize from Yamagata

KIM Dong-ryeong and PARK Kyoung-tae’s documentary on ‘military brothels’ Tour of Duty is raising considerable attention at international documentary film festivals. Set in the military brothels located around U.S. military Camp Town in northern Gyeonggi Province, Tour of Duty, which deals with the lives of three women who each live with scars branded on their bodies, has received the Special Prize from the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival’s International Competition section. Filmmaker KIM Dong-ryeong has already received the Ogawa Shinsuke Prize for her previous film American Alley at the same film festival’s New Asian Currents section.

In addition, Tour of Duty was screened in the official competition section ‘Opus Bonum’ at the 17th Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival in Czech Republic, which is the largest documentary film festival in Central and Eastern Europe and was held from October 24th to 28th. A further domestic showcase of the documentary, following its premiere at the Busan International Film Festival last year, will take place at the 39th Seoul Independent Film Festival, which will open on November 28th.
