Former doctor Kwon Yonghyeon leads an organization advocating for the legalization and decriminalization of cannabis. His mission takes a dramatic turn when he's imprisoned for recommending cannabis to an ailing patient. Meanwhile, Cheon Hogyun, a farmer dedicated to preserving native seeds, scatters hemp seeds along the DMZ border, spreading a message of peace, reconciliation, and coexistence. The film questions whether ecologists, academics, poets, doctors, musicians, architects, and others who perceive hemp's vitality and efficacy differently from conventional wisdom can overcome the deeply entrenched prejudices in Korean society. Following her previous works Time to Read Poems (2021) and Sister J (2022), director Lee Soojung once again challenges social taboos. However, Pull is less an attack on the ideology that has demonized hemp since the 1970s and more a meditation on the beauty of alternative lifestyles and the value of coexisting with non-humans. In this narrative, the true protagonist is the grass itself. Defying the laws and ethics of a country that has criminalized a simple plant, this bold film visualizes the beauty of roadside wild grass in myriad ways. By turns subversive, bleak, and uplifting, the story of grass unfolds in two parts, with this film being the first. (DMZ International Documentary Film Festival)
