Indieground — established by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC; Chairperson Han Sang-jun) to improve distribution and exhibition conditions for Korean independent and art-house cinema — has launched its call for submissions for the 2027 Independent Film Library. The submission window runs from 2026.07.20 (Mon) through 2026.08.04 (Tue) via the Indieground website.

The Indieground Independent Film Library is the organization's flagship program, in operation since 2020, developed to create new distribution pathways for Korean independent and art-house films and to expand their reach to wider audiences. Selected films receive multi-channel support, including screenings on the Indieground online platform, community screenings, special curated screenings, and promotional content production.

This year's call is open to films completed on or after January 2025, based on first screening date; for theatrical releases, the theatrical release date applies. Films of all genres — narrative, documentary, animation, and experimental — and of any running time are eligible. Submissions may be made by any production company, distributor, or individual who holds online and offline screening rights to the work.

All submitted films will go through a final selection process, with approximately 80 films to be chosen in total: up to 20 features and up to 60 shorts. Selected features will each receive a distribution support grant of KRW 4,000,000 (approx. USD 2,900), and selected shorts will each receive KRW 1,500,000 (approx. USD 1,090), along with multi-channel distribution support via online and offline platforms.

The Independent Film Library has seen steady year-on-year growth in submissions, reflecting sustained interest from the independent filmmaking community. The 2025 Independent Film Library call received a record 996 submissions — 170 features and 826 shorts — with 92 films ultimately selected. The 2025 selections, which address a wide range of contemporary social themes including labor, climate, disability, peace, and gender, are currently available to audiences through the Indieground online screening platform. The program has supported those works through a variety of formats, including community screenings, corporate and institutional screening partnerships, YouTube promotional content, director interview videos, and short films produced in support of independent art-house cinema.

Films selected for the 2027 Independent Film Library will be introduced to audiences on a rolling basis from 2027 onward through the Indieground platform and its social media channels. Indieground has affirmed its commitment to further expanding its role as a platform connecting filmmakers and audiences, and to building a stable long-term distribution infrastructure for independent film.
